‘Longlegs’ is a captivating movie that follows a detective chasing down an enigmatic serial killer known as Longlegs. This film masterfully intertwines the suspense of a thriller with the dark lure of horror. A scalpel is used to craft this film as it displays detailed artistry that is both beautiful and disturbing. This film is not a “jump-scare” thriller, but it is cerebral as it peers into the depths of human darkness.
Nicholas Cage and Maika Monroe are both fantastic. Cage delivers an unbelievable haunting performance as the antagonist, embodying the role that is both terrifying and intriguing. It is noteworthy to mention that Cage is almost unrecognizable! FBI Agent Lee Harker is portrayed by Monroe who carries the film with an unforgettable performance.
Director Oz Perkins meticulously crafted an unsettling journey into the depths of the human psyche, set against the backdrop of a gripping FBI investigation. Perkins sets up each shot beautifully and moves the camera angles in a strategic way. In addition, the film switches from different aspect ratios to create a more immersive viewing experience and to differentiate between different narratives.
The script is a labyrinthine puzzle and cryptograph leading the viewer to a terrifying conclusion.
The sound design, color palette, set designs, and cinematography are standouts. Each frame is masterfully composed with shadows and lighting creating a sense of suspense and eeriness that lingers. The film’s atmosphere and tone ooze tension and is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling
In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and would highly recommend it – especially, to people who enjoy slow-burn psychological horror films like ‘The Babadook’, ‘Se7en’, ‘Hereditary’ and ‘Silence of the Lambs’. Go watch it!
