‘The Killer’ is a film that journeys into the mind of a killer – systematic, mechanical, emotionless, and merciless. It is a gripping thriller that weaves an intricate tapestry of suspense and tension. The storyline is a labyrinth of unexpected twists exploring the human psyche and is expertly crafted to keep the audience guessing until the very end.
David Fincher’s masterful storytelling, coupled with brilliant performances, and striking visuals creates an immersive experience. With scalpel-like precision, Fincher methodically and meticulously develops an interesting character study that tackles the nature of a personal vendetta as well as the mental sanity, rationality, and emotional control necessary to remain successful and alive as an assassin.
Michael Fassbender is excellent in his performance as he unravels the secrets and philosophical revelations of an antihero and forces the viewer to think about the themes of good and evil through the eyes of a skilled assassin. Moreover, the hauntingly calm narration from Fassbender is a semi-poetic musing about the methods and routines of an assassin which adds to the appeal of the film.
The soundtrack provides a hauntingly beautiful backdrop to the film.
The cinematography captures the beauty of the subdued color palette of the film’s tone.
Fincher has directed some of my favorites like Fight Club and Se7en and while the ‘The Killer’, does not supersede these classics – I still think this movie was brilliant and showcased a storyline that challenges perceptions. Overall a very good movie, where Fassbender plays a pivotal role.
