Wicked

Posted on November 23, 2024January 10, 2025

As a passionate fan of the iconic 1939 film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (one of my favorite films of all time), I had high expectations for this film!

Director Jon M. Chu said: “My goal was to go beyond the matte paintings, beyond a digital world, and really let the audience step into Oz. We hope that you feel the scope and scale, that it challenges your imagination.” He certainly exceeded expectations as every scene is a visual treat – from the vibrant landscapes of Oz to the intricate interiors  – everything feels magical.

The cinematography goes above and beyond what is possible for a proscenium stage. The movie encompasses sweeping shots, close-ups, and beautiful set designs showing the vibrant colors of Oz.  The layering of architectural homages and narrative touchstones from Munchkinland to Shiz University to Emerald City was just so whimsical and grand.

The casting was great, with each actor breathing fresh energy into their roles while staying true to the original characters.  Ariana Grande brings her own unique personality and charm to Glinda. Cynthia Erivo delivers a heartfelt performance as Elphaba, infusing the character with emotion and strength.

Overall, I thought the architectural design integration was the biggest stand-out. The beautiful designs enhance the storytelling and world-building experience, and the special effects are also top-notch. Oh and I loved the numerous cinematic nods and Easter eggs to the original Wizard of Oz!

This is a fun movie for the holiday season! Go check it out!
