Summary: Elvis (2022) explores Presley’s (Austin Butler) life and music as the film is seen through the prism of his controversial manager Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The movie displays the highs and lows and the many challenges and controversies he experienced throughout his career. Elvis (2022) also highlights one of the most significant and influential people in his life, Priscilla.
Thoughts: This incredible movie exhibits Elvis Presley’s rise to superstardom as the KING of Rock and Roll and is truly a beautiful tribute to the legendary performer. In my opinion, it’s one of the greatest biopics that I’ve seen. Tom Hanks is predictably very good and cleverly plays a manipulative and greedy Colonel Parker. Austin Butler was stellar – a star was born. His Oscar-worthy performance was dynamic and revolutionary. Butler channeled and embodied the spirit of Elvis through his voice, dance moves and charismatic mannerisms.
What I liked most is how the film humanizes Elvis allowing the audience to see him as more than just a performer. The film’s breathless pacing suits a rock star lifestyle and takes the audience on a wild ride – but the director and co-screenwriter, Baz Luhrmann, still captures Presley’s humanity. Luhrmann turns the King of Rock and Roll into a three-dimensional human being. He highlights the glitz and glamour incredibly well and provides the audience with a foundational view of pop culture during Elvis’ time. Moreover, Luhrmann style of film making renders a melodrama that lends itself to the larger than life icon that is Elvis.
This film is a beautiful tribute to one of the most iconic artists of all time and gives you a glimpse of Elvis’ command and creativity. It’s a stunning achievement and a must see!
Let’s start dissecting! Today we are going to discuss a little about vocal cord anatomy.
How do the vocal cords work when singing?
“Because singing is movement, singers need and deserve training that creates an accurate body
map, a fine-tuned kinesthetic sense, and the conscious use of inclusive awareness”
-MaryJean Allen, from “What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body” (Plural Publishing)
The voice is a musical instrument, just like a piano, guitar or violin.
When you phonate (production of sound or speech), the vocal cords are brought together over the top of the trachea (windpipe) and when combined with air flow, it creates vocal fold vibration.
