‘Society of the Snow’ is based on a true story (1972) adapted from Pablo Vierci’s book that details the extraordinary tale of the survivors of the famed 1972 Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 plane crash. The film follows the survivors’ 72-day ordeal as they struggle to stay alive in freezing temperatures with limited resources. Bayona did a phenomenal job presenting the story in such an incredible way. He delivers a humanistic and ideological vision for the film’s theme of cannibalism, and he also sensitively addresses the physical and psychological turmoil experienced by the survivors.
This film captures all key cinematic elements. The sound editing was flawless. The visual effects of the crash scene were so realistic, powerful, and intense. The snowy setting itself was gorgeous and terrifying and it was all woven together keeping the viewer engaged and invested. The script was superb and did the “real life event” justice. The acting was superb, and all the characters were well developed. Moreover, it was pleasant to witness the powerful moments like moral conundrums, existential questions, solidarity, and little moments of happiness amid adversity.
The themes of heroism, survival, friendship, sacrifice, grief, trauma, resilience, and miracles resonates throughout. It is noteworthy to mention that the film’s graphic portrayal of the crash and its aftermath may be too disturbing and emotionally draining for some viewers.
‘Society of the Snow’ film is a 10/10. This is without doubt one of the best stories of human courage, determination, and survival under unimaginable circumstances. This movie deserves praise and recognition to those who brought the film alive today and in honor of the survivors.
