‘Fingernails’ is an incredible meditation on love, belief, and technology. The themes resonated so deeply and the characters are very relatable. Writer-director Christos Nikou addresses this heartfelt yet absurdist odyssey in a society with solid structure.
Jessica Buckley is brilliant and the chemistry with Riz Ahmed and is felt from the first moment they met. These amazing actors elevate what is already a compelling watch to another level. The subplot involving Anna’s relationship with Amir and the ensuing ethical and emotional predicaments adds layers to the story.
The cinematography captures the sterile, clinical atmosphere of the Love Institute, juxtaposing it against the emotional struggles of the characters. The actual ‘fingernail test’ scenes undermines the film’s attempts at seriousness. The film’s climax which is also the poignant resolution felt a little rushed.
Overall, I think that ‘Fingernails’ has a stylistic foundation by adding themes aimed at promoting truly genuine feelings while plucking at the heartstrings without becoming too sappy. I recommend this film!
