‘Back to Black’ is a 2024 drama based on the legacy of Amy Winehouse. The film tells the story of her music, career, challenges, and relationships – it was tastefully done. The movie features beautiful live music that highlights themes of romance, fame, and personal struggles.
Marisa Abela did a great job in her portrayal of Amy and delivers a genuine performance. The music compilation is impressive with a fantastic selection of jazz music along with Winehouse’s hits. Thus, the cinematic soundtrack strengthens the film’s emotional depth and complements the storyline constructively.
I thought the cinematography was great as it employs a mix of static and dynamic shots, slow zoom-ins, tilts, and symmetrical camera work which created a unique visual storytelling experience.
The only drawback I have is that I thought the writing was a bit weak and it struggled to depict Winehouse’s story cohesively.
Overall, this film was solid with great cinematography and music. Go see it!
