‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ was a delightful and nostalgic return to Tim Burton’s quirky world! This movie introduced some fresh elements to keep it feeling modern while capturing the humor and spooky charm of the original. I will say this early on – while I liked this movie, I love the brilliant OG more.
Director Tim Burton has a wonderful way of creating imaginative and whimsical worlds with literally eye-popping visual effects. This set (like the sandworm afterlife and purgatory waiting room) is filled with striking visuals and creative pieces that have Burton’s signature style.
In my opinion, the production quality was the best part of this film. Burton employed practical effects with puppeteers, prosthetics and props that were spectacular. I especially like the sandworms/snake/transformations.
Michael Keaton is sensational as Beetlejuice, bringing his energy and humor to the role and he is still able to “possess” our hearts even after 36 years. The story contained humor, heart, and that supernatural mischief as one would expect from the Beetlejuice franchise. The best part of this legacy sequel is that Beetlejuice has more screen-time. Winona Ryder is funny and brings depth to her character. Catherine O’Hara is awesome in her comedic tone. The new cast members, Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Williem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci, were welcome additions. I also thought the soundtrack was excellent!
It is noteworthy to mention that the various convoluted subplots were a bit noncohesive and chaotic, but I guess that works for this movie!
In summary, Beetlejuice 2 delivers on its promise of spooky fun with a nostalgic kick. It was fun to see Burton return to his world building roots! I recommend this movie!
