‘Conclave’ takes the audience into the world of the Vatican and delves into the secrets of the electoral process within Catholicism. This meticulously constructed, gripping thriller highlights the intersection and clash between faith, religion and politics.
The cast ensemble is outstanding with Ralph Fiennes delivering a terrific performance that is nuanced and powerful. He plays the role of a deeply conflicted man whose faith and morality are tested under extreme circumstances as he is appointed to lead the conclave through a complex conspiracy. Stanley Tucci, Isabella Rossellini and John Lithgow are also stand outs. The development and dynamics among the characters is suspenseful and captivating.
Adam Berger’s detailed direction, combined with an exceptional screenplay allows for entertainment and also introspection in this intriguing thriller.
This film certainly resonates with the current times as we are in the heat of political tension around the world and the film also touches upon controversial topics that the modern church has to consider. The chaos around the city and the outside world problems are woven within the narrative which adds dimension to the storytelling. It is noteworthy to mention that the ending is controversial and will definitely spark up discussions.
The tone and atmosphere is amplified by a pulse inducing background score, and an immersive sound design that begs to be heard in a theatre setting.
The cinematography is fantastic and draws the audience into the story of the most secretive ritual held in Rome. I loved the shots of the Sistine Chapel sanctuary where the cardinals casted their ballots for a new leader.
Overall, ‘Conclave’ is an excellent mysterious papal thriller that is absolutely deserving of all the hype!
