The best way to describe the Dahmer TV series is: compelling and repellant in equal measure.
Although brutally graphic and at times hard to watch, this is probably the most accurate and comprehensive TV series about Jeffrey Dahmer.
The acting is top-notch. Evan Peters is just phenomenal and intensely creepy as Dahmer. His looks, eye shifts, demeanor, the way he talks and even his movements are disturbing. Absolutely convincing and stunning performance. Niecy Nash as the concerned neighbor did a great job in her role. Richard Jenkins also did a fantastic job as Dahmer’s father. The rest of the cast was superb as well.
The production was impeccable with a perfect tone and pace. The script was well written with great direction and editing.
All the different perspectives and stories come together in a meaningful way.
I think one of the most disturbing details of Dahmer’s crimes was how the police ignored and dismissed witness reports. Thus, their lack of action allowed Dahmer to stay free and continue his killing spree.
So let’s get to dissecting… is the mind of a serial killer any different than a normal person?
According to neuroscientist, Jim Fallon, the brains of psychopaths or serial killers have low orbital cortex activity. This is the area that is believed to be involved with ethical behavior, more decision-making, and impulse control. Low activity in this region means there’s less normal suppression of behaviors, including rage, violence, eating, sex, and drinking.
“People with low orbital cortex activity are either free-wheeling types or sociopaths,” Fallon said.
Overall, the profile of a serial killer is a person who murders three or more people in at least three separate events. They generally kill during a cycle when they’re feeling stressed, and feel temporarily relieved after they commit the homicide. “The motivations of serial killers vary, but they often fall into these four categories: obtaining money, experiencing the thrill, a sense of power, and a desire to rid the world of evildoers”.
