Fresh Kills

Posted on June 22, 2024June 22, 2024

‘Fresh Kills’ is a thought-provoking film with a masterful narrative. The story takes place in Staten Island during the 80s and 90s and offers a glimpse into the Italian-American Larusso family.

This coming of age “mob story” focuses on two sisters – Connie (Odessa A’zion) and Rose (Emily Bader), and their internal and external struggles with growing up in a crime family. Their performances are powerful and their human stories from a female perspective are very believable.

‘Fresh Kills’ was written and directed by Jennifer Esposito in her directorial debut. The film is authentic – from film sets to the outfits to the soundtrack. The writing is superb, the performances are layered and outstanding with strong, three-dimensional character development. There are keynote themes of family and how family dynamics shape who you become in life.

The film truly has masterful storytelling, and its authenticity is a standout. Definitely give it a watch! I highly recommend this movie.
