‘Heretic’ was gripping, well-crafted and thought-provoking. Two Mormon’s looking to convert members of their community come across Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant)and enter a game of cat and mouse with the subject of theology at the forefront of the plot. This cerebral chamber piece from the dynamic duo Bryan Woods and Scott Beck keeps the viewer thinking while delivering entertainment. This experimental take in the horror genre was risky but they did a great job!
The directorial style had atmospheric tension, with suspenseful silences and startling visuals to build uneasiness. Also, the deliberate pacing allowing the horror to seep in slowly.
Grant is a diabolically complex villain- his performance was a huge stand out! He grounds the film with a character obsessed with deconstructing the strategies and philosophies behind religion. The narrative unfolds in a clever and visually compelling way keeping me invested and intrigued. The unpredictability and suspense had me on the edge of my seat.
Overall, this film balances psychological tension with profound thematic exploration. I highly recommend this film. Give it a watch!
