Parallel Mothers

Posted on January 24, 2022January 24, 2024

‘Parallel Mothers’ gives us a good dose of Almodovar, focusing on the complexities of motherhood and the legacy of family. The drama unfolds as the lasting effects of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime serve as a political backdrop. Almodovar’s distinct style is on display here and the excellent scoring and camera cuts serve the build-up of tension well. The use of bold colors will be no surprise to fans of the director’s earlier work, but play a pivotal role in drawing the viewer in. The acting is top-notch as well, and Milena Smit shines here. Penelope Cruz takes us on an emotional journey with a nuanced performance of a woman struggling with a hidden secret. For the Almodovar experienced, you know what you will be getting but will still find yourself surprised. If you are a newbie, and you enjoy unique drama with a shot of realism, give it a try. Either way, I recommend this film to all.
