“I still feel I don’t really deserve this” Stressing that he had remained true to his political commitments and with constant references to his mother, Javier Bardem said he was “really grateful”, during a press conference that he gave this Friday, for the Donostia award that he was to receive later on during the opening gala of the Festival. “It’s really humbling to accept this award. I don’t deserve it any more than those who have won it before me,“ he stated.
Three decades after winning the Silver Shell here in Donostia, Bardem admitted that although his situation had utterly changed, he still felt really touched to be recognised with an award like this. “It moves me that someone can still believe I deserve this,” he remarked, adding that he feels just like he did on that night back in 1994. “I felt the same way then, it hit me really hard, and I still feel I don’t really deserve this.” Finally, asked about the actors’ strike that had prevented him from collecting the award a year ago, Bardem replied that studios and platforms needed to understand a series of considerations that were quite simply not fair. “The acting profession is complicated. You need to be lucky and show a great deal of resistance and belief. When you decide to become an actor, you know that you are entering a profession that is really insecure. I am not the best example of this, but I know what it is like to experience it because of what my mother went through.”
