‘Smile 2’ is a brilliant horror sequel with elevated horror that blends elements of psychological thriller and supernatural fright.
I highly encourage viewers to watch the prequel before seeing ‘Smile 2’. The film builds upon the foundation laid by the first film but this movie delves deeper into the psychological torture by those who are afflicted by the sinister “smile”. ‘Smile 2’ is more intense, the suspenseful is palpable, and the emotionally resonant. It also had some fun jump scares!
The film has awesome acting, masterful cinematography and a haunting score. Naomi Scott’s portrayal was great as her descent into madness and mania is chilling and heartbreaking. The movie explores themes of trauma, mental health, and resilience in a way that is both thought-provoking and terrifying.
The cinematography and attention to detail is fantastic, creating a sense of unease and dread through its use of angles and claustrophobic framing. Every frame serves a purpose in the larger narrative and the camera movements are fluid and dynamic. The haunting score further enhances the chilling atmosphere and amplifies the tension.
If you are a fan of ‘The Shining’ like me, you will appreciate the fact that Ray Nicholson is in this movie. Ray is his real-life dad Jack Nicholson’s doppelganger in ‘Smile 2’ and he sports a creepy smile in some scenes, harkening back to Jack’s iconic grin and stare in ‘The Shining’.
Overall, ‘Smile 2’ pushes the boundaries of horror and storytelling – it’s visually terrifying and audibly horrifying. It’s a perfect movie for the Halloween season!
