Summary: Finney Shaw is a boy who’s being held in a soundproof basement by a sadistic, masked killer. When a disconnected phone on the wall starts to ring, he discovers that he can hear the voices of the s previous victims.
Thoughts: Blumhouse Productions delivered a solid original horror film, by using the storyline and character development to propel suspense. There are countless moments where you’ll be writhing with anxiety and crawling with goosebumps from the suspense. Instead of a great deal of gore, the movie relied more upon the underlying fear and turmoil of being kidnapped. “The Black Phone” gives you horror, suspense, supernatural and family drama all wrapped into one brilliant film. The writing is excellent, and the slow burn opening sets a great pace. Moreover, this film has great jump scares and prominent sound editing.
Ethan Hawke put on a chilling but spectacular performance. The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) is a sadistic character in a black top hat and a half-face clown and a devil mask. He drives in a black van and uses black balloons to lure and abduct young boys. Finney (Mason Thames) is snatched and kept in a soundproof basement. A black phone hanging on the wall of his basement prison mysteriously rings and he makes contact with the ghosts of the lost boys. Mason Thames deserves to be recognized for this role! He does a great job at expressing sheer horror and utilizes his critical thinking skills. Intertwined within this suspense film are theme of love, care, forgiveness, redemption, bravery, faith and hope.
I think this movie is so well crafted with a natural spin in suspense. If you are in the mood for a great thriller, check out the great performances from Hawke and the young actors!
